Patterson retires after 26 years of service

Sheriff Carter Weaver honored Sgt. Robert Patterson at a retirement ceremony on August 10 for his 26 years with the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.
Sgt. Patterson joined the sheriff’s office at the Detention Center in 1996 after completing 20 years in the U.S. Army. His last military assignment was drill instructor at Fort Jackson. He became a deputy in the Patrol Division in 1999 and worked as a transport officer before taking the job as coordinator of community outreach.
Sheriff Weaver said Patterson developed the standards for the job as he attended functions from children’s day-care facilities to nursing homes to encourage safety. He represented the sheriff’s office in parades and escorted the Easter Bunny on his rounds. He met with members of the community to develop Neighborhood Watch programs and filled in for School Resource Officers when they needed time off.
Sgt. Patterson said he approached his job with love – for both his fellow deputies and the people they serve. He was named GCSO Deputy of the Year for 2020. His official last day will be Friday, Aug. 12.
